Monumental garage door restoring original canal house façade

In Amsterdam, this monumental canal house from 1887 has been carefully brought back to its original appearance. The front façade, designed by Dutch architect Dolf van Gendt, had lost its balance over time. A later-installed sectional door no longer reflected the architectural integrity of the building. With the creation of a new wooden garage door, the façade has now been restored to its original design.

Tailor-made based on historic features

Every detail was approached with precision and respect for the history of the building, ensuring that the garage door once again feels like a natural part of the architecture. The structure of the property presented unique challenges. The building is slightly out of alignment and the façade is visibly uneven. The floor slopes approximately 16 millimetres and could not be altered, requiring the bottom of the door to be crafted at an angle so it closes perfectly within the existing conditions.

Historic wooden garage door

A façade matching its history

This project goes beyond simply replacing a garage door. It demonstrates how careful craftsmanship and respect for heritage contribute to the character of the streetscape. A canal house that once again takes its place in the city with pride.

Starting from the original façade

Every dimension of the door has been engineered with millimetre precision. Classic panel structures, decorative mouldings and colour choices have been meticulously translated into the design of the garage door, ensuring it aligns seamlessly with the original 1887 façade.
